Patchouli - Pogostemon Cablin

Country of origin:  Indonesia

Thought to be native to Asia, in particular Indonesia and the Philippines, this perrenial herb bush is extensively cultivated throughout the region.   It has a strong grounding in Eastern cultures where it is believed that it helps to prevent the spread of disease.  It has a long history of use for scenting cloths and in Japan and Malaysia, it has been used as an antidote to poisonous snake bites.

The leaves are dried and steam distilled to produce an amber to dark orange liquid with a rich, earthy, herbaceous aroma with fruity undertones.  The aroma most certainly improves with age.  An excellent fixative in soaps and perfumes and is a well known insect repellent and fungicide.  May help to calm and relieve nervous exhaustion.  Excellent for skin care products, especially for wrinkles and acne.  Patchouli can add real aromatic depth and contribute to a well-rounded aromatic blend.  Using too much however, can overpower a blend.
