Safflower Oil - Cartamus Tinctorius

Safflower oil - Cartamus Tinctorius

Also called thistle oil and is related to the lettuce, chicory, artichoke, daisy and the sunflower.  It is also called 'American Saffron' and is sometimes used to adulterate saffron.  Safflower seeds and flowers have been used to for dying material.

Safflower oil contains up to 80% linoliec acid and oleic acid and has a similar profile to sunflower oil.  It is useful for helping to restructure and moisturise the skin and a good choice for formulations for eczema and rough skin.  The oil has a very thin consistency and is a rather dry oil that is absorbed by the skin easily.

Safflower makes a good carrier oil in aromatherapy applications but it is best to blend with a 'thicker' oil to ensure a good balance.  It can be added to formulations for the treatment of psoriasis and chapped or hardened skin. It is a useful oil for most skins and performs well in most creams, lotions, balms as well as scrubs, bath bombs and bath oil.
